what would you be telling barack obama if you were vising him about these upcoming debates? >> i would tell him first he has to understand that romney can win this debate if he's scripted, prepared, has really worked at it. if you watched him on "60 minutes" last sunday, he was smooth, he was clear, he was succinct. he was different than he has been. he has to be careful not to be spontaneous because when he is, he gets himself in trouble. i think they are on a search for zingers and one-liners because romney was cover-upped by kennedy. they have to be careful because the president could have a comeback. i think what you do in the debate preps you try to game out what the other side is going to say and then you try to see how you can respond. it's always strongest when it's a comeback. zenners don't work as a cute line. they work as part of the fabric of argument. in 1980, they knew jimmy carter was going to look at ronald reagan and say, "you were against medicare" at the beginning, happened to be true. but reagan looked at him, shook his head and said, "there you go again.

most people will go into these debates, if you like obama, you will think he did a debate job. romney has said that he wants to use the debates as a clarifying moment. he thinks the democrats have waged an inaccurate campaign. he has said he expects obama to tell more untruths on the debate stage but he thinks there is a real opportunity for him. there is congratulations from the romney campaign, what a great debater obama is and in some ways they are mediocre debaters. there have been some mistakes. obama is likeable enough moment with hillary clinton. gwen: think of the debates you have covered, chuck -- >> because i'm old. [laughter] gwen: which once would you say have made a difference in the outcome? >> well, i'm not actually this old -- [laughter] >> clearly when gerald ford said that the poland not under soviet domination that was one of his memorable type of gaffes and the big putdown from lloyd bentsten and dan quayle. they don't have a moment where they say that guy is clearly better than the other guy. they are both well prepared. these are smart people. and not like

and obama has not debated since four years ago. dana, what do you think? >> dana: except for "the view." >> bob: what do you think of the expectations? dais when president obama says that, it's not credible. they don't believe that. they think so highly of themselves and their campaign, when he says that, you know he is setting it up so the headline the next day will be despite expectation of him not doing well, president obama shined. that's what you will read. >> greg: surprisingly good point. gamesmanship. obama doesn't believe there is anything on earth anyone can do better than him. false modesty that is comically nauseating after a while. no, there is nothing that he thinks romney can do better than him. >> eric: a good reason for that. everyone after the last four years ago said what a great speaker he is! he is one of the best political speakers over the walk the earth. remember that? then no, i'm not that good. >> bob: do you think you have chance of setting expectation lower for himself? >> andrea: does he? >> bob: yeah. >> andrea: he wants them

i think clearly president obama missed the opportunity to do that during the debate. he kind of let mr. romney climb out of that kind of space that they had put him in, but there will be many other opportunities as we see the president's back strong on the stump hammering romney. there will be another debate. we forget it's a long time ago, mondale wins the first debate against reagan, reagan comes back and cleans his clock in the second one. john kerry in 2004, you remember, won the first debate, against george bush. george bush similarly seemed very unhappy to be there as the president. bush comes back in the second one and wins, goes on to win. so lots of opportunity for the president to come back. but clearly let romney back into this. >> i guess, sam, how far is mitt going to go towards the middle? i mean, bill brings up the question of reproductive rights, the obama care question is certainly still, you know, how much is mitt romney going to embrace massachusetts, his legacy there, in the coming weeks? it's a sharp pivot. >> wasn't just during the debate. he was

joe biden, out debated barack obama in every single debate back in 2008. every single debate. chris dodd, joe biden, hillary clinton just ran circles around him and people get -- at some point you just have to say because he doesn't have his -- i mean, as great of a grasp on the issues as the people he's debating. >> that's sobering but true. i believe it's the professor versus -- >> how can you be president of the united states, mark halperin and not have these basic answers? >> well, it's more the format i think than not having the answers. he spent a lot of the evening going after mitt romney for things that he thinks he can win the election on like taxes and medicare. it wasn't like he never responded to him. >> isn't the format in washington that you get in a room with someone and you go at it and try and figure it out? >> and that's what we're asking. has he been too isolated? listen, we talked to him -- the guy is brilliant. he really is. but has he become so isolated there's not the back and forth with even democratic leadership? because the democr
